Millions of cigarettes seized in Rosslare
CUSTOMS officers seized two million illegally imported cigarettes in an operation at Rosslare Harbour over the weekend.
The cigarettes with an estimated retail value of €1 million, were found in a container being brought into the port on a ferry from Cherbourg in France last Saturday.
The cigarette shipment was hidden in a shipment of stone cladding on the 70ft container.
A man was arrested and brought to Wexford Garda Station for questioning in connection with the haul, which represented a potential loss to the exchequer of €750,000. He was later brought to a special sitting of Gorey District Court, where he was remanded in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court in Dublin this week.
