Minister Howlin and Tommy Carr (84) branded scumbags
MINISTER Brendan Howlin was subjected to a torrent of abuse when he chanced upon a Household Tax protest in Wexford town on Saturday.
Minister Howlin and his octogenarian passenger, former Mayor of Wexford Tommy Carr, were at the Riverbank for lunch with Labour councillor George Lawlor.
An 80 strong protest group had gathered at the Riverbank following an earlier protest against the Household, Water and Septic Tank charges in Enniscorthy.
As Minister Howlin, who was driving his own car, arrived at the Riverbank with Mr. Carr he was greeted by cries of 'Shame on You'.
Cllr. George Lawlor said as the trio left the hotel after lunch they were continually shouted at. Minister Howlin and Mr. Carr got into Minister Howlin's car and as they did a group of protestors 'surrounded the car shouting 'f **king scumbag, f **king scumbags'.
'It wasn't pleasant, particularly for his 84-year-old passenger. Fortunately the gardai were there to oversee the protests.
'In my view, there was an element of thuggery to it. Some of the protestors prevented him from getting out of the car park,' said Cllr. Lawlor.
