A MOTORIST driving a large vehicle is thought to have crashed into the archway leading to Barntown Church over the weekend.

It's believed that the driver of the vehicle turned off the N25 to get into the church car park, but realised too late he wasn't going to make it.

The vehicle dislodged and broke more than 20 slates and smashed some of the wooden joists holding them in place.

Fr. John Carroll, who is recuperating following a fall in which he broke his left leg and right ankle, could not be reached for comment.
