Murrintown man escapes jail term

A MAN convicted of driving without insurance, was ordered to do 140 hours community service in lieu of two months in prison by Judge Donnchadh O Buachalla at Wexford District Court.

Philip McCauley, Forth Mountain, Murrintown was convicted of driving without insurance at The Faythe on June 26 2009. A probation report indicated that the defendant was a suitable candidate for community service.

After hearing this Judge O Buachalla directed that he complete 140 hours instead of a prison sentence and said he was disqualifying him from driving for a year. However, Tim Cummings, solicitor said his client drives a lorry for an oil company and told Judge O Buachalla that he had considered the community service penalty as an alternative to disqualification.

Judge O Buachalla said that in the circumstances, he would not impose a driving ban.
