Na Fianna hold their first boxing tournament
NA FIANNA Boxing Club pulled plenty of punches last weekend at their inaugural tournament in the Riverbank House Hotel.
A specially selected Wexford team took on a Munster contingent in what proved to be a great night of action.
Organiser Sean Barnes said, 'We took all of the best boxers available in the county to go head to head against a team from Munster'.
The four boxers represnting Na Fianna were Aaron Mcguire, Walnut Grove, Danny O'connor, Wolfe Tone, Stephen Kearney, Selskar, and Andrew Ryan, Belmount.
The club performed very well with three wins out of four contests.
This comes as no surprise seeing as they performed very well at the recent County Championships where they took home four Gold medals.
Three of these champions progressed to the Leinster Championships where they put in an impressive performance only to be knocked out by what Sean termed ' the very best boxers at All Ireland level'.
Of course this was a particularly special night for the family of the late Nicky Barnes, Liam Mellows Park, who was one of the founding members of the club.
'Nicky put in a huge amount of work trying to get the club up and running', said Sean.
Nicky was honoured on the night when the club made a presentation of the 'Best Boxer of the Season' shield in his memory.
Danny O'connor was named this year's 'Best Boxer of the Season'.
Na Fianna are based at St John's Volunteers club in mannix Place and they train on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 6.30-8.30p.m. New members are always welcome for further details contact Sean Barnes on 087-2485275.
