New Chief Superintendent takes over
County Wexford has a new chief superintendent, Derek Smart, who began in his role on Monday.
Chief Supt Smart will oversee around 320 staff across the Wexford division until a new chief superintendent is appointed for Co Wexford.
He is also the top guard in County Tipperary, Outgoing chief superintendent Paddy McMenamin wished Mr Smart well in his role, as he returns to Store Street Garda Station in Dublin after just over a year in County Wexford.
The Tyrone man said: 'It's been a very, very fast year. I didn't expect to be leaving so soon but I would have to say it will certainly be a year in my service in An Garda Siochana that will rank pretty high. From the staff here in the division and the management teams across the three districts. The front-line staff who are there 24/7 and all of the support staff and members and in the specialist units, I have to say I couldn't have asked any more of them and I have been very, very happy here. I know that without the support of the community we wouldn't be able to do what we do.'
He said the bond between the community and the guards and various agencies gardaí work with is amazing.
'To me, I haven't seen it anywhere else I have been; and I have been privileged to be part of that working environment.'
