No charges are expected to be brought against man who threw ring buoys into Wexford harbour on New Year's Day.

Speaking at the January meeting of Wexford County Council Cllr George Lawlor said he understood there would be no charges preferred against the man.

Cllr Robbie Ireton said 'these safety rings save lives and I hope the full rigours of the law are applied to the person who interfered with them.'

'It's a horrendous thing for people to be taking down ring buoys', fumed Cllr Davy Hynes.

In the early hours of New Year's Day a man threw two ring buoys in the harbour but was spotted by two crews from Marine Watch who described it as 'a mindless act'.

The gardai were alerted and arrested the man who was later questioned about the incident in Gorey Garda Station.
