Kieran Donohoe, CEO of the Ferns Diocesan Youth Service, said he certainly would not welcome its opening.

'I would normally welcome any new facility for young people but gambling is regarded as a vice and I would be very concerned that it would lead to addiction,' he said.

'We don't allow young people to drink alcohol until they can handle it and the same should apply to gambling.'

Meanwhile, Anthony O'Brien, Treatment Manager at the Aiseiri Addiction Centre, pointed out that research shows that the earlier a person is exposed to gambling, the more likely they are to develop a problem.

'Facilitating young people to gamble early in life exposes them to the risk of becoming problem gamblers,' he said.
