Owners untraceable as boat wrecks hoisted from harbour
IT WAS UP, up and away as two boat wrecks were removed from Wexford harbour by crane in an operation organised by the new harbour authority Wexford County Council.
The owners of the boats could not be traced despite lengthy investigations by the Council which decided to remove them for both maritime safety and aesthetic reasons.
One of the boats was lying unused at Kaats Strand for over 20 years while the other vessel rested in the harbour for about five years and was moved from the quay front about three years ago.
The County Council hired a crane to remove the derelict vessels and the operation went smoothly, according to Borough Engineer Tadhg O Corcora.
They will be disposed of by a licensed operator under the Waste Management Act.
The Borough Engineer said there was a danger that the boats would break up and cause damage.
