Pensioner knocked down by tractor in Enniscorthy

An elderly woman in her 70s was knocked down at lunch time on Tuesday as she crossed the road at Abbey Quay, Enniscorthy.

Gardai said that at 1.55pm the woman was crossing the road close to the junction near Burger Mac's when she was hit by a tractor and trailer.

The elderly woman suffered severe injuries in the crash and was rushed to Wexford General Hospital where her condition was initially described as critical.

However following treatment her condition was later downgraded to stable although it is expected that she will take several months to recover from her injuries which included a number of broken bones.

The driver of the tractor and trailer was stopped a short distance away.

A garda spokesperson said they are appealing for information in respect of the crash. 'We are appealing for any drivers or pedestrians who were in the area and who may have seen the crash to contact us. It was very busy at the time as it was close to the end of lunch time.

'We have interviewed a number of people and we are waiting to speak to the injured lady when she is well enough to talk to us. She will be recovering for a long time.'

Gardai are investigating the possibility that the driver of the tractor and trailer was unaware he had hit the woman as he travelled through the town.

They are also hoping to speak to anyone who was on the scene at the time but didn't give their details to the gardai at the scene to contact them. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Enniscorthy Garda Station.
