LIAM MELLOWS PARK RESIDENTS SAY:

A'NNE MARIE O CONNOR

Grandparents in Liam Mellows Park are hopeful that money can be found to put play equipment in their estate for their children's children.

According to RAPID co-ordinator Caroline Godkin, the number of small children in the Liam Mellows Park estate has increased in the last few years as 'mature' households welcome grandchildren into the family mix.

Last week residents met with Caroline and local councillor Anthony Kelly to ask for their assistance to get playground facilities in the housing estate.

'There was money around to build playgrounds a few years ago, but Liam Mellows Park was a mature estate and there weren't the numbers of small children in the area. Now a lot of families have grandchildren who have come along, and some people have moved back to Liam Mellows Park with their children. They now want to see if funds are there for a playground,' said Caroline.

Caroline added that the money dried up for playgrounds in 2007, and Wexford County Council also have very little money in the pot for this kind of endeavour at the moment.

She said that residents have now agreed to do a profile of the area to see how many children are living in, or regularly visit Liam Mellows Park, and what age group they fit into.

'We will see if we can support the local residents in any way we can,' said Caroline.
