WEXFORD'S former Labour Mayor Cllr George Lawlor found himself all dressed up with nowhere to go when he got stuck in a lift at Clayton White's Hotel at the weekend.

'Politics has its ups and downs,' said George after spending 20 minutes in the lift by himself on the reception floor, with the lift doors refusing to budge.

'Brendan (Howlin) was outside laughing at me,' said the Labour councillor, of his party leader who kept in contact through his mobile phone.

George said he was taking a break from the Labour Party conference and heading out for a rehearsal for Wexford Light Opera Society's production of '9 to 5' when the lift stopped at 'one minute to 12'.

His impromptu performance went down well in the hotel reception with photographers asking people to move out of the way in the quest for 'a money shot'.

The lift doors were opened after a little over 20 minutes and George emerged unscathed from his brief period of isolation.
