Rackard statue will be built by 2012
WEXFORD Borough Council is proceeding with plans to erect a statue in Selskar Square, honouring GAA legend Nickey Rackard, at a cost of €120,000.
The project was passed at the council's annual estimates meeting, although the money was set aside last year.
Director of services Adrian Doyle said the selection process was recently completed and the sculpture will be in place in 2012.
But Fianna Fáil councillor Fergie Kehoe disagreed with the proposal to spend €120,000 on the monument in the coming year.
'I feel it's the wrong time. I think it should be postponed for a few years,' he told the estimates meeting.
Cllr Kehoe said he believes the statue is a great idea. 'I have no problem with it being built but I think €120,000 is a lot of money in the current economic climate,' he said.
Meanwhile, the local authority is reducing its general arts programme budget by €15,000 but under the category of community and recreational development, it is increasing its funding of the successful annual 'Art in the Open' festival in the Bullring by the same amount.
The council is maintaining its annual payment of €25,000 to Wexford Arts Centre and will continue to support the St Patrick's Day Festival and Culture Night.
