Rapped for cigarettes tax dodge
A POLISH MAN who brought 3,800 cigarettes in through Rosslare Harbour, was fined €4,000 by Judge John Coughlan at Wexford District Court.
'I have no sympathy for him. He defrauded the Irish taxpayer,' said Judge Coughan of Grzegorz Piotrowski with an address in Blanchardstown, Dublin.
State Solicitor Kevin O' Doherty said the case had previously come before Judge Donnchadh O Buachalla who was sympathetic towards the defendant as he had travelled from Poland for the court hearing.
Mr. O' Doherty said that as the penalty could only be mitigated to €2,500, he had suggested that a community service order be imposed in lieu of a prison sentence.
He was exploring the possibility of an alternative to a fine.
The State Solicitor said the Revenue Commissioners had no objection to this. Fining the defendant €4,000, Judge Coughlan said, 'I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone who defrauds the Irish taxpayer.'
