Restaurateur fined €500 over illegal worker
A €500 FINE was imposed at Gorey District Court last week on Castlebridge restaurateur Pinshan Li, for employing an illegal worker.
Caroline Hayes from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, told the court she visited the Regent Chinese Restaurant on August 20, 2012, and found that there were employees working there without work permits. She later met the owner and his accountant and learnt that one employee continued working there until September 25.
The proprietor appeared in court charged with an employment or labour law offence on September 22, 2012.
He said he checked the worker's tax affairs and had his PPS number but forgot to check for a work permit.
The court was told that anyone who comes into the country can get a PPS number, and there is no way to link the PPS number to the work permit system.
