'Ridiculous' roads require major funding
Wexford County Council's Director of Services for Roads has described as ridiculous the lack of funding being apportioned to the county's roads.
Eamonn Hore said three national road surveys have been carried out and county Wexford has been in the bottom 5 per cent for funding. 'The department were supposed to use the surveys to allocate funding levels. Ever since then Wexford County Council has received the same level of funding. We showed the biggest increase when money was available. There is nothing wrong with the level of the work. It's ridiculously hard to get out of this situation when the department won't recognise the state of the roads and that we need the additional funds. We have been singularly unsuccessful with our funding.' Cllr John Hegarty said the county is performing well in several areas, but said our roads are in 'serious trouble'.
He said it is important for Wexford County Council to compare itself with a similar sized county,
Cllr Michael Sheehan said the council needs to exercise caution when it comes to encouraging people to pay for their car tax online, adding that this could lead to all payments being done online and the closure of the motor tax office at County Hall.
