Sad death of Gerry in Italy
HIS FRIENDS in Wexford Town have learned with regret of the death in Italy of John 'Gerry' Harpur from Bernadette Place, who died unexpectedly at the age of 53. A resident of Trim in Co. Meath and a senior lecturer in the computer science department at Maynooth College, he contracted a fatal illness while at his holiday home near the Adriatic in Cortona south of Rome.
His passing has prompted many expressions of sympathy to his parents John and Betty in Bernadette Place as well as to his sister Mary Louise. The deceased is also mourned by his grieving wife Maria (née Lawlor), who works as a consultant doctor at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, and by the couple's children Conal, Nessan and Ruth.
Gerry was a star pupil in Wexford CBS before leaving home for college in Dublin and he remained in the academic world for the rest of his life. He was well known for his dry sense of humour which was laced with a sense of concern for others, as shown in the interest he took in assisting people with Asperger's syndrome to make the most of their lives.
He died suddenly and unexpectedly on July 12 and his devastated family experienced the stress of an extended wait before they were able to bring him home to Ireland. The funeral took place in Trim last Saturday, followed by interment at St Loman's Cemetery in the town.
