Sad farewell to dynamic Helen
THE DEATH of Helen Bowen (née Walsh) of Rosehill, Rosslare Strand and originally of Church Street, Listowel, County Kerry has left two communities in shock.
Helen ( pictured), who celebrated her 60th birthday in Shanghai, China, on 18 February, was one of the most dynamic and highly respected people within the two communities.
Educated in Loreto College, St. Stephen's Green, Dublin, Helen went on to graduate from the College of Catering on Cathal Brugha Street. She then progressed to managing some of the better known restaurants in Dublin before moving to London in 1979 to join her Dublin born husband to be, Rob Bowen.
After their marriage in 1982, Helen decided upon a career change, and was successfully employed as a consultant in the fashion industry for companies including Charles of the Ritz, Lancome and Yves Saint Laurent ( YSL) in both Harrod's in London and House of Fraser in Cheltenham.
In 1992 the family returned to Ireland with their three children, Pierce, Jonathan and Gareth and lived in Moycullen, County Galway, where Helen returned to her love of catering and started her own business ' Cilcarra Fresh Foods'. After a few years the family moved to Rosslare. Helen being as dynamic as ever, she managed to secure the catering contract for Wexford Vocational College which she ran successfully for 16 years.
There was, however, another side to Helen that few people were witness to, as she was great believer in young people, particularly the disadvantaged. It was not uncommon for her to go home at the end of the day without any money as a result of her meeting someone who was in need of either money or clothing, or both. Helen always stood up to the plate and helped them out, with her time and encouragement towards them. She would never mention this side of her personality to anyone.
Helen was the epitome of a modern dynamic woman who had time for everyone she met. She is greatly missed by her loving husband, sons, sisters Mary, Jean and Bernadette, brother Pierce, extended family and very many friends.
May she rest in peace.
