Saturday night clean-up nets rubbish harvest

Overflowing bins are part of the problem.

it must be soul-destroying for the members of Wexford Tidy Towns who gave up their time to remove 20 bags of rubbish from Wexford town centre on Saturday night only to see the main street littered again by the time they came back down.

'It was fairly badly littered. We collected between 17 and 20 bags of rubbish between 5.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. on Saturday.

Coming back along the main street at 7.30 p.m. it had already come to be littered again,' said Denis Collins, from Wexford Tidy Towns.

'There were empty soda cans, coffee cups and chip bags all over.. it's always a battle when the town is busy,' said Denis.

Ideally, he said, there would be teams of people out emptying the street bins all day Saturday and Sunday during busy times as the town fills with Christmas shoppers and people out for Christmas parties, but 'no one has the capacity to do that'.

'It's just the sheer volume that is the problem. Even if people make a good attempt to ger rid of their litter, they find the litter bins are full.'
