Secondary schools in Wexford closed as teachers strike
Hundreds of teachers are on the picket line outside secondary schools across Wexford on Thursday, January 22, weeks before exam students are to due to sit their mocks.
This is the second in a series of strikes mounted by second level teachers over proposals to change the Junior Certificate cycle.
Last week talks between the ASTI and the TUI, the second level teacher unions, and the Minster for Education reached an impasse and a bid to broker a deal between the two failed.
According to the ASTI and the TUI 'there remains a considerable difference between the two respective positions'.
Minister for Education Jan O'Sullivan said the strike will not serve any purpose and said 'it's obviously going to cause huge inconvenience to parents in particular, but also to staff and students as well and to schools.'
Despite remaining at loggerheads both parties agreed to engage in further discussions.
