Smiling Brother Donald says goodbye to Friary
THE FAMILIAR smiling face of Brother Donald (pictured), a member of the Franciscan Friary for over three years, has disappeared from the streets of Wexford.
American-born Brother Donald has left town for a new position in Canterbury where he will begin running the canteen in the Franciscan's international study centre in the New Year.
A native of McHenry near Chicago, he is a chef by trade and also became an expert campanologist during his time in Wexford after the giant bell in the Friary tower was restored and put into sonorous action for the first time in 20 years. Brother Donald volunteered to come to Wexford from a monastery in Marytown, outside Chicago as the Franciscan Conventuals were taking over the Friary in 2007 and was very impressed by the town when he arrived. 'I enjoyed my time in Wexford very much. I've never been in a community like it. People are very community-minded, like a family. I've not seen such religious people,' he said.
He will never forget Wexford. 'I've brought all the people with me, Wexford is where I am. It's a place I will always remember,' he said.
