Staff and students of St Peter's College handed over a generous amount, €4,746, to the Friends of Wexford Hospice Homecare last week.

Over 50 students and some of the staff dived into icy water at Curracloe beach on St Stephen's Day to help raise the money for the local charity.

'That was our sixteenth year having done the swim. It is certainly not for the faint hearted but every year the students seem very keen on raising money and taking part in it,' said teacher Cathal O'Gara.

Cathal said the event has gone from strength to strength and the occasion has become bigger every year with people from outside the school taking an interest.

'The students get a sponsorship card early December and we gather them all up the end of January, transferring it electronically to the charity. We always raise a decent amount of money in that time,' said Cathal.

Cathal said the students are already looking forward to next year's swim.
