Stained glass window is smashed in Boolavogue
BREAK-INS AT RURAL CHURCHES ACROSS COUNTY WEXFORD
BURGLARS caused thousands of euro worth of damage to the church in Boolavogue on Sunday night, but left with nothing more valuable than an invitation to the annual Chrism Mass in St Aidan's Cathedral.
Curate Fr Michael Byrne was alerted to the problem by a parishioner headed for the adjoining cemetery on Monday morning. The ground at the side of the church was littered with pieces of an old stained glass window of Our Lady, which was destroyed by the raiders. This act of vandalism allowed them entry to the sacristy where they discovered that everything of value had been locked away. They were unable to gain admission to the main church and left only with the envelope containing the Mass invitation.
'The whole thing was a mess,' reported Fr Byrne after gardaí examined the scene. 'It is an awful shame because it was a beautiful stained glass window.'
