A 17-year-old St Peter's College student recently presented a cheque for €1,031 to the staff at St Bridget's Day Care Centre.

Ciarán Hearne from Kilmuckridge undertook a sponsored Christmas Day swim at Morriscastle Strand to raise funds for the centre, which Ciarán's grandfather had been a member of.

Ciarán also completed work experience at the centre as part of his Transition Year programme.

He is now in fifth year and is interested in pursuing a career in healthcare after his Leaving Cert.

On Christmas Day, he braved the cold waters of Morriscastle Strand while around 30 spectators looked on, none of whom were inclined to don their togs and join in the fun!

It wasn't just a quick run in and out either as Ciarán proceeded to swim around for a few minutes after taking the initial plunge.

Patricia Whelan, healthcare assistant at St Bridget's Day Care Centre expressed their gratitude to Ciarán, commending his generosity and saying they were very grateful to him for his kind donation.

The money, she said, would go towards some outings and day trips for the service users during the summer months.
