Student paid deposit and rent with dodgy cheque

A 26-YEAR-OLD student appeared in court last week admitting a charge of deception after the cheque she tendered to a Wexford landlord bounced.

Accused Serena Clinton, now of 72 Pearse Park in Drogheda, gave the cheque for €1,600 by way of deposit and rent to landlord Declan Cunningham at Pucán View in Newtown Road, Wexford on October 30, 2008. The court heard that she previously had been instructed by MBNA to destroy all cheques and cards on the relevant account. Solicitor Ed King assured Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla that his client intended to make full restitution to Declan Cunningham and he looked for an adjournment. He added that Ms. Clinton was in a relationship that was 'not good' around the time of the offence and also that her sister had died. Ms. Clinton had been in a very respectable job but was now earning just €60 per week.

The judge granted a remand on bail to July 6.
