Expert spellers from 12 different schools across Wexford and Waterford gathered in the Riverside Park Hotel recently to participate in an inter-schools spelling bee competition.

The super spellers contest was part of a JCSP library project and the participants in the Enniscorthy event won their respective in-house competitions held in their own schools.

Each of the participating schools selected their top three spellers to attend the Co Wexford event.

The competition was organised by Éadaoin Quinn, from Enniscorthy VC, and Lee Dickerson, from Selskar College, Wexford.

The two school librarians invited other JCSP schools to take part.

Following some very close competition and tense rounds the final three schools in the running for top honours were Selskar College and Ramsgrange Community School, from Wexford, and Mount Sion CBS, from Waterford.

The contest culminated in a knock-out final which saw the students compete in head-to-head spelling challenges, where the least slip-up would lead to their elimination.

Despite two strong model county participants in the final - who performed exceptionally well - it was the Deise team from Mount Sion CBS that emerged victorious in the end.

Following the competition the participants, teachers, librarians and some accompanying parents were treated to lunch and refreshments.

It was the second year the competition was held expressing delight at its success the organisers said they are hoping it will be a national school event next year.
