Support for same sex Yes vote

Councillors gave their support for a yes vote in the upcoming same sex marriage referendum in May.

Chairman Cllr Malcolm Byrne brought the motion, saying: 'This impacts hundreds, if not thousands of Wexford people. As a council we should provide the necessary leadership.'

Cllr Paddy Kavanagh was the sole objector to the motion, saying there was no need for the local authority to move any further on the matter.

'I don't see the need to go any further (on this); the referendum has been put to the people.'

Cllr George Lawlor said following recent remarks made by Senator Jim Walsh it was incumbent upon the council to support the motion on the referendum.
