Support for the introduction of medicinal cannabis

By Esther Hayden

There was unanimous support for a notion of motion calling for the introduction of medicinal cannabis at last Monday's meeting of Wexford County Council.

Cllr Deirdre Wadding laid down the notion calling 'on Minister Simon Harris to immediately move to make available medicinal cannabis in support of Very Twomey and other families in need. We further more request the Minister to acknowledge that the terms of the HPRA report limiting use to three conditions only is too narrow and fails many suffering chronic pain from a range of conditions.'

Cllr Wadding said she had put forward similar motion last year which hadn't been supported. She said that people are now more aware of the benefits of medicinal cannabis for pain relief. 'It's about saving people and giving them a quality of life. I've marched with Vera on a couple of legs of her journey and to see her commitment is striking and heart rending. We have to have some compassion, we are not talking about the wholesale sale of cannabis at this point.'
