Swimmers take on icy waters
There was a chilly end to 2019 in Kilmore Quay as some twenty swimmers took to the icy waters at the Little Beach for the annual Christmas swim.
Having challenged locals to take a dip for the past eight years, the event always takes place between Christmas and New Year's and is a source of great fun among participants, as well as those perhaps not so brave watching on.
Organised by Wexford Sub Aqua Club, the plucky volunteers collect sponsorship in the build-up to Christmas and there's also a bucket collection on the day with the money being divided between the club and the local RNLI. While sponsorship cards are still out at the moment, those behind the swim are hopeful that this year will have raised somewhere between €1,000 and €1,500.
'It was great fun,' said David Nolan of Wexford Sub Aqua Club. 'It was absolutely freezing. There was one year we did it in the snow and I think it was warmer than it was this year! It's great fun though and we're delighted to be able to give some money to the RNLI. I think on average we hand over between €500 and €700 each year.'
The swimmers thanked everyone involved for their donations and are looking forward to presenting the final tally which will provide a New Year's boost to both the RNLI and Wexford Sub Aqua Club.
