Rain or shine, the swimsuits will be out when TK Maxx opens its doors on Paul Quay in Wexford on Thursday.

That's because, in an opening day special, the discount superstore is offering a €50 TK Maxx gift card to the first 20 people to show up Thursday morning in their swimwear.

Large crowds are expected for the 10 a.m. opening of the new TK Maxx at the long-mothballed Stonebridge complex on the Quays.

Up to 40 jobs have been created in the first sizeable retail project in the town since 2007.

The discount retailer had been planning to open last autumn, but an objection to An Bord Pleanala by town businessman Nigel Hamilton set the project back for several months before it was thrown out by the appeals board.

Shop owners in the south of the town are hopeful that the opening of T.K. Maxx will lead to an increase in business for them.

The planning permission is for three retail units within the Stonebridge development. T.K. Maxx will occupy the largest 2,505 sq.m ground floor retail space, with the businesses to occupy the two other retail units still to be named.

TK Maxx says Wexford GAA star Lee Chin and top fashion stylist Cathy O'Connor will officially open the new store which features over 26,000 square feet of 'must-have' fashion and accessories for women, men and kids at a fraction of the normal retail price.

The chain says the TK Maxx concept is simple. TK Maxx buyers shop the world all year round working direct with designers and negotiating great deals to bring customers famous brands at a fraction of the normal retail price.

With a modern and stylish, but no frills store environment, further savings can be passed on to customers. A typical TK Maxx store stocks on average 50,000 items with daily deliveries bringing up to 10,000 new items to store every week so customers will always find a constantly fresh and exciting mix of top brands and great quality at the lowest prices, every time they visit.

Commenting on the new Wexford store, Store Manager Stephen Barron said, 'We are very excited to be opening the new store and bringing shoppers in Wexford savings on all their favourite brands.'
