Thank you from the Friary
The Guardian of the Franciscan Friary Fr. Ciprian Budau has thanked the people of Wexford for their generous response to an ongoing appeal for funds to repair damaged decorative cornices in the historic church.
Work began before Christmas on the restoration work which is costing in the region of €60,000 with people already having contributed almost €30,000 in individual donations and group fundraisers.
Wexford County Council is providing a grant of €25,000 towards refurbishment work in the Friary church which was originally founded by the Franciscans in 1230.
'I announced it a few times in the church. People were very kind and very considerate. I was really surprised to see how concerned people were,' said Fr. Ciprian.
'In the beginning people would give €50 or €20 or €10 but when they saw the work happening they started offering a bit more. We are very grateful for their contributions'.
Asked whether the Friars themselves have sufficient money to cover their living costs, Fr. Ciprian said: 'we're not too bad. We don't need a lot. The Friars lead a simple life. We have food in plenty and we have heating in the church and the Friary which is great.'
