The long, long road to taking estates in charge
MOVES have started to make Wexford County Council responsible for roads, paths, drainage and the general upkeep of 105 private housing estates across the county.
Two of these have recently been taken in charge and thirteen more are expected to be added in the near future. However, more than ninety estates remain a long way from being handed over to the local authority.
According to data released last week, in which no estate was named, six of the developers involved have gone out of business.
In 44 more cases, officials are waiting for developers to provide documents or to complete work on the ground.
Five estates are the target of legal proceedings by the planning department of the council.
Twenty-one are due to be reinspected but the process has yet to begin in 14 cases which are filed under the heading 'awaiting initial inspection'.
