Hard to believe that 'Sacrifice' was Elton John's first solo number one in his home country, over two decades into a stellar career. The song had originally been released the previous year, but stalled at number 55 in the UK and 18 in the US. BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Wright began playing it in the early months of 1990, and more radio stations followed suit. It was re-released as a double-A side single and reached number one, staying on top for five weeks. It stalled at 2 in Ireland, held off the top by the Rep. Of Ireland Squad's 'Put 'Em Under Pressure', an Irish No. 1 for 13 consecutive weeks.
