Wexford Toastmasters are looking forward to a year of celebration as they set out their stall for their tenth anniversary.

Founded in 2008, the group has gone from strength to strength over the past decade, helping members to develop their public speaking skills.

The club breaks for the summer months but at their first night back, they discussed plans for the coming year, including a celebration event in January and, hopefully, some further events throughout the year. The local club is very diverse with members hailing from all over the world including the UK, USA, Russia, Portugal, Sweden, Germany, Poland and South Africa.

Club PRO Gillian Wild explained that people came to the meetings for lots of different reasons, whether it was for help with a work presentation or a best man's speech, or simply for the social interaction. She said people learned a lot both from speaking, and listening to others.

The club is always open to new members. Meetings last two hours, with a refreshment break midway. In the first half, the aim is to have a minimum of three prepared speeches from members, all of whom will receive feedback from another member. In the second half of the meeting, the 'topics master' of the evening will offer topics for members to consider, as a way of helping them to think on their feet and respond.

As with everything, the Toastmasters programme is always evolving and developing.

One member remarked: 'Toastmasters is all about 'learning by doing', and as it happens over time, it is a far more natural process than an intensive weekend course.'

Anyone curious about Wexford Toastmasters is welcome to drop in for a meeting or two. The group's current venue is Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club, at 8 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of the month. For more information, contact Gillian on 087 1234 166.
