Tributes were paid to retired Diageo Ireland representative Brian Cantwell as Wexford publicans gathered in Sinnotts Bar in Distillery Road to launch the 67th Guinness Singing and Swinging Pubs Competition.

Brian was the Wexford District Diageo rep for 23 years, taking up the position in 1996 and helping to promote and develop the pub talent competition held every year during Wexford Festival Opera. He retired at the end of August.

Brian and his wife Alison were among the guests at the launch which was also attended by the new Diageo representative for the area, Róisín Boyd who is looking forward to her first competition this year.

On behalf of local publicans, County Wexford Vintners chairman Michael Wallace thanked Brian for his service over the past two decades and made a presentation to him and County secretary, Teresa Atkinson presented his wife with a bouquet of flowers.

A total of 31 pubs and hotel bars are taking part in the 2019 Singing and Swinging Pubs which will start on Friday, October 18, continuing until Thursday, October 31 with the results due to be posted in traditional style in the Bullring at midnight on the final night.

The adjudicator is the Waterford-based singer and actor who has advised pubs not to keep their best singers until last as he will be judging entries on the first 30 minutes.
