Val and David mark their engagement

ANNE MARIE O'CONNOR

HOT ON the heels of Ireland's first Civil Partnership ceremony in April, Wexford couple Val Walsh and David Scallan celebrated their engagement last weekend.

Val and David, who live inTthe Faythe, actually got engaged at the end of March but decided to share their happiness with family and friends at an engagement party in South 51 on Friday night.

Val is the son of Ger and Peggy Walsh from Barntown, while David is the son of Angela and Jack Scallan from King Street.

The couples parents and their extended families were in South 51 to raise a toast to the couple.

While they are one of the first gay couples to publicly pledge their troth in Wexford, they are just 'one of many' who have done so in recent weeks.

'We have quite a few friends who have gotten engaged recently. We're certainly not the first,' said Val, who is a long time LGBT campaigner.

Val and David have been partners for the last three years, and plan to hold their civil partnership ceremony in August 2012.
