THE FLAGS and the flowers were out in Co. Wexford last week as the President of Ireland Mary McAleese came to visit. The First Lady, who recently hosted the Queen of England and the President of America, arrived to shake the hands of community and RNLI volunteers in Kilmore Quay, Taghmon and Bree.

The honoured areas laid out the red carpet for Her Excellency and burst with pride as she congratulated them on being role models of community spirit and energy.

The President also visited the Environmental Protection Agency at Johnstown Castle and paid tribute to staff for their work in protecting the environment for future generations.

She was making one of her rare public appearances without her husband Martin, who now has new duties as a recently appointed member of Seanad Éireann.
