Wexford tenor Michael set to make TV special for American audience
He may have gone on to worldwide fame and acclaim but Michael Londra has never forgotten his roots. And, to prove that point, he is returning home next month to tape a brand new television special which will be aired nationwide in the US.
A live recording of Michael's upcoming concert in the National Opera House on June 7 will be the centrepiece of the television special which will air on PBS and is to be entitled 'Ireland with Michael'. The feature documentary will also showcase everything Wexford has to offer for tourists as Michael takes viewers around the county's sights and attractions.
'Fans, time and time again, say how much they love Wexford and its people so I felt that it was time the county had some attention on the national PBS network. We've lost out to the West for way too long. We plan on focusing on some of my favorite spots including Johnstown, Kilmore Quay and the Hook. I am delighted that Wexford County Council and the Visit Wexford campaign are on board to help my team get the cooperation of tourism sites around the county. I will make sure that Wexford is seen in the light it deserves,' said the 54-year old.
The concert, which will also be made into a live double album, will blend Michael's voice with Ireland's leading musicians and some very special guest artists including West End star, Zoe Rainey. Zoe featured in Liam Bates and Eoin Colfer's musical, NOËL which Michael produced at the Opera House several years ago and toured in North America in 2018. Local Wexford choirs and solo artists will join Michael through the night. Liam Bates will act as musical director for the project.
The show will feature a Christmas section so the audience are being encouraged to bring festive decoration for that part of the concert.
Highlights in the tenor's illustrious career include recording with Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti on the Arias Ancora album for Universal Records, performing as lead singer of Riverdance on Broadway, singing with Judy Collins at the JFK 50 celebrations for the Kennedy family and earning two Emmy nominations for his first TV PBS special 'Beyond Celtic'.
He has built a reputation as a theatre producer in the US and his Tony and Emmy nominated partnership Venuworks Theatricals is now nationally known as a production house and agency representing other artists. Tickets for the show on June 7 are priced €22.50.
