Witness appeal after body of man in his 60s recovered from Courtown Harbour
Gardai in Gorey are appealing for witnesses after the body of a man was recovered from Courtown Harbour at around 9pm on Thursday, January 22.
A garda spokesperson said they wanted to speak to anyone who had any details about when the car in which the man was found entered the harbour. She said the body of a local man in his early 60s had been recovered from the car at around 9pm on Thursday evening by garda sub aqua divers.
The car itself had been located much earlier in the day but the gardai had to wait for the sub aqua team to arrive as they were on a search and rescue mission in Co Kilkenny.
Courtown RNLI had initially responded to a report of a submerged car in the entrance of the harbour. The volunteer lifeboat crew responded and together with Courtown Coastguard the car was located submerged in the channel. The weather at the scene was good but due to the bad visibility in the water divers were required to search the car.
After the man's body had been taken from the car a crane was used to remove the car. The body of the man was brought to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem is expected to take place on Friday, January 23.
Sam Kennedy Lifeboat Operations Manager praised the crew for their response and thanked the local community for their assistance.
Anyone with any information about when the car entered the water is asked to contact Gorey Gardai on 053 9430690.
