Woman is jailed for shoplifting
A WEXFORD woman was sentenced to two months imprisonment at last Tuesday's sitting of New Ross District Court for theft.
Before the court was Sharon O'Brien, with addresses at 24 Oak Tree Heights, Castlebridge, 24 Rectory Heights, Castlebridge, 136 North Circular Road, Dublin and Tua Nua, Dublin 7 charged with theft at Pennys on September 14, 2009, with being drunk in public and theft at Tesco on March 21, 2011 and with being drunk in public on March 17, 2007 at Pierce Court, Wexford.
Defence solicitor Ed King explained that his client was before Gorey Court last Thursday on foot of a bench warrant for a public order offence. He said she was in a poor state both physically and mentally and has been in Mountjoy since then where she has detoxed.He said that the defendant wishes to plead guilty to all matters.
'You are familiar with this lady. She does have previous convictions, all drink related,' added Mr. King, who explained that these offences occurred when Ms. O'Brien was homeless and when she was abusing alcohol to a ' huge level'.
He explained that his client was almost a year off drink and had completed a one year course in Social Studies.
Judge O Buachalla convicted and sentenced the defendant, who has seventy previous convictions, to two months imprisonment for the theft offence at Penneys and took the other two matters into consideration.
