Woman recovering after Wexford axe attack

a WOMAN who was seriously injured when she was struck in the face with a hatchet during a fight involving two men at an apartment in Clonard last Monday is recovering in hospital in Dublin.

Nicole Dwyer, aged 20, had her jaw broken in two places, lost a number of teeth and suffered a substantial gash to her face during the incident which happened when a man armed with an axe barged into the apartment she was in at the Green, Clonard.

She was initially taken to Wexford General Hospital by ambulance before being transferred to James' Hospital in Dublin for reconstructive surgery to her face.

Nicole had 50 stitches to her face and a metal plate inserted in her jaw.

Her sister Jenna said Nicole was in a lot of pain.

Gardai said the incident happened when a man arrived at the apartment armed with a hatchet following an altercation with another man.

Nicole, who was lying on a couch with a duvet over her, was struck in the face during a struggle between the two men.

'The alleged offender swung the axe and hit her in the face with it,' said Chief Superintendent John Roche.

He said the man had been arrested and detained under Section 4 for the Criminal Justice Act and was subsequently released without charge.

Supt.Roche said gardai had still to inteview the victim of the incident and the other man involved.

He said a file would be going to the DPP.
