Wexford town's showpiece Wygram Nursing Home will open next month creating an initial 45 jobs.

However, this will increase to 60 once it is up and running.

Recruitment at the new 71-bed nursing home has been under way for some time and James White, Director of Nursing, said that they are still accepting applications.

'We had a huge amount of applications, particularly in the nursing field, but we are still recruiting.'

Wygram will offer long-term care, short-term care, respite, convalescent care and palliative care. Other care services at Wygram will include nursing care, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, chiropody and health and beauty services.

The €6.5million project is located between Upper John Street and Davitt Road with views of Wexford Harbour.

The layout, which was designed by Mahon & Fox, is over three floors.

The cleverly-designed building has bedrooms arranged around a central core, the majority of which will have views over Wexford town and harbour. A feature of the nursing home will be Davitt House, a major focal point as you enter the nursing home grounds; this building is designed as a separate community area where events can take place i.e. coffee mornings, bridge, local community events etc.

James said that there has been great interest from the community and some of the 71 beds have been taken by people looking to move into a nursing home. 'There has been great interest, particularly as the building nears completion. Some of the beds have been taken but we are still taking bookings.'

The nursing home which will be the only nursing home in the town itself is holding an open afternoon on Saturday, April 25 between 2pm and 5pm. This will give families and individuals the opportunity to view the state-of-the-art facilities on offer to residents.

James, Audrey Moloney and their team will be on hand to meet people and show them the facilities.

James said 'We look forward to welcoming all our visitors to Wygram where we will be able to showcase the extensive facilities our nursing home has to offer. Our ultimate goal is to provide a residential care setting that reflects the needs and requirements of each individual resident and provides quality care in a friendly and inclusive environment. It is our desire that residents live a full independent and active life, and are afforded the utmost respect and dignity from our staff.
