Zeus the seal returns to his natural home

THERE was great excitement in Kilmore Quay on Saturday as a grey seal pup returned to his natural habitat.

'Zeus' had been cared for by the Courtown-based Irish Seal Sanctuary since mid-September after he was found on the beach at Kilmore Quay in a very poor condition.

He was less than three weeks old at the time and still had his lanugo (his long white baby hair).

He was covered in bites, the cause of which was unknown but the seal sanctuary believed they may have been dog bites, or that he could have tried to suckle from a female other than his mother.

Zeus did very well at the Irish Seal Sanctuary and weighted in at 40kgs before he was released back into the wild on Saturday. He has been tagged as part of the tagging programme of the Irish Seal Sanctuary.
