There was a wonderful buzz around Wexford's Dun Mhuire Theatre last week as the 56th annual Wexford Drama Festival took centre stage. Taking place over the course of a week, the festival saw a fantastic variety of plays staged by drama groups from right across the country.

Among those staging productions were Kilrush, Kilworth Dramatic Society, Tinahely, Kilmuckridge Drama Group, Bridge Drama, Wexford Drama Group, Gorey and DADS, all of whom produced plays of an incredibly high standard, giving the judges a real headache when it came to separating them.

After much deliberation, Bridge Drama Group took home the coveted Best Overall Play in the open section for 'Brighton Beach Memoirs', while Kilworth Dramatic Society from Cork took the win in the confined section.

There was another local win as Kilmuckridge Drama Group were awarded the Audience Cup for their production 'The Righteous Are Bold', as voted by patrons of the festival.

The festival saw wonderful attendances over the course of the week, with particularly big audiences turning out for the local groups. Mr Martin Maguire was the official adjudicator and spoke of the high quality of each performance.

'Wexford amateur drama is alive and well with five of the groups appearing on stage this year from County Wexford,' said Festival Chairperson Rachel Murphy.

'It was especially good to see so many newcomers at the festival this year in Wexford with 23 new actors making their debut on the circuit.'
