When Carol Sinnott saw a competition asking entrants why they would like to win tickets to the Festival Opera's opening night along with dinner and an overnight stay in the Ferrycarrig Hotel, she knew exactly how to respond.

As parents to a seven-month-old baby, Carol and husband Martin Farrell, had chosen to eschew nights out in favour of time with their first-born. So, in no more than 100 words, Carol penned a heartwarming poem about the joys of parenthood and how a night at the opera would be the perfect way to return to the social scene.

Impressed by her ode, the judges declared Carol the winner and so it was that she and Martin spent their first evening away from their new daughter at the Opera no less.

'We haven't had a night out since she was born, and as a first night out this was fantastic, 100% enjoyable and something we'd recommend to anyone,' said Carol.

'We checked into the Ferrycarrig and the three of us went down to the pool. Then my mom and dad arrived to mind our daughter, we were very grateful to them for babysitting for us.'

Following dinner at Reeds Restaurant the pair took a bus into town, enjoying the scenery along the way.

'We caught the fireworks on the way in, they were quite magical,' Carol said. 'The opera was just excellent, perfect entertainment, fantastic music. We're delighted with the prize and so grateful to all the organisers.'
