Poetic Mountains at Whites
'POETIC Mountains' is the title of Donal Murray's festival exhibition in Whites of Wexford.
This exhibition explores his interest in multi-figurative compositions of urban city life and country town festivals.
The paintings entitled 'The new beginning' and 'The Return' attest to Murray's skill as a visual storyteller and his uncompromising ability to take on classical themes of vulnerability, reconciliation, and human folly, associated with classical themes of the Masters.
Alongside the animated figurative scenes, he paints the more sombre and silent atmospheric moments as day turns into night, creating calm and tranquil settings.
Murray's considerable skills as a colourist puts him in good stead, bringing the scenes alive by virtue of the chromatic subtlety with which he evokes the shimmering play of sunlight on the water and the very different way it affects stone surface on the surrounding buildings.
Here, as in other paintings, the old metropolis of Dublin provides Murray with ample opportunity to indulge his penchant for the warm, earthy hues which impact on his paintings, their mood of misty romanticism.
