Enniscorthy take spoils in local derby
Enniscorthy 7, Gorey 0: In a pulsating Leinster Under-19 League opener, Enniscorthy just about saw off their near neighbours in a titanic struggle on the narrow confines of the back pitch at Ross Road.
In the first-half the Gorey forwards were in the ascendancy, with only Michael Fanning, Jamie Barron, Jack and Davy Murphy playing to their full potential for Enniscorthy.
After Gorey missed a few penalties, Enniscorthy won some quick ball which was swiftly moved by half-backs Neil McCrea through Rob Frayne to put centre Martin Steemers into space. He dummied to Dylan Walsh before galloping away to touch down under the posts, with Frayne kicking the conversion.
The second-half started with some dominance from the home side, with Tom Ryan, Conor McDonald and Brian Bolger imposing themselves on the game which provided some good chances for Wally Furlong, Jonnie Squance and Brian Windsor. Alas, these came to nothing and resulted in a siege of their line for last 20 minutes.
Gorey were only repulsed by some excellent clearences from David Dunne and Brendan Kearney, allied to Jim White's line-out work and ferocious tackling by backs and forwards alike.
