Forde shows his class

IT WAS a significant showing from veteran Matty Forde as he kicked nine superb points as Kilanerin dismantled the Fethard challenge in this hugely-competitive WFC Senior football championship game at Farmleigh on Thursday last.

The scoreline may be somewhat flattering to Kilanerin as Fethard enjoyed their share of possession, but their finishing was atrocious as they kicked some dreadful wides even from scoreable frees, factors that quickly saw them fall away from a potential winning position.

This was in stark contrast to what was happening at the opposite end where Forde gave an exhibition of forward finishing, kicking memorable points both from play and frees. One point midway through the second-half was worth paying the money to see.

Having won possession some 40 metres out from goal, close to the sideline, he turned his marker inside out before planting a superb kick straight over the centre of the bar. His effort even won the admiration of Fethard supporters who applauded.

Darren Foley and Forde exchanged two early pointed frees before Kilanerin began to make the better use of their possession, going on to kick 1-4 without reply. Aidan Jones pointed his side in front for the first time after eleven minutes, but Forde tagged on three further points, two from frees, before the game's opening goal arrived.

Fethard looked to have a Kilanerin attack under control, but a dreadful clearance off the wing across the centre was intercepted by Denis Jones who cut through before laying the ball off to Mick Molloy, and hecontinued the move before planting his shot into the bottom corner of the net just approaching the break. In additional time Forde pointed a further free which left the eventual winners leading by 1-6 to 0-1 at the interval, Fethard having failed to score since the opening minutes despite the numerous chances created.

The south county side lifted their game on the resumption as Kevin Rowe shot home a fine goal from an acute angle, beating 'keeper Tom Hughes at his near post, and when Kieran Dwyer tagged on a point, one expected a strong second-half showing.

That was as good as it got though, as Kilanerin with Jim Hughes and Niall Gethings regaining control in midfield quickly took back the initiative.

One was then treated to the Matty Forde show as he kicked some superb points, leaving Kilanerin to cruise to the easiest of victories in the end.
