Adamstown ease into Junior 'B' final

A strong first-half display from Adamstown propelled them to a convincing win over Askamore in the Junior 'B' hurling championship semi-final in Fr. Murphy Park on Saturday.

Adamstown 2-19 Askamore 0-14

The first quarter was end to end as Ted Kinsella and John Connors exchanged '65s in the first two minutes. Kinsella and Connors again showed accuracy from the placed ball as Askamore led by 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes.

The first score from play came from Adamstown's Harry Cosgrave from an acute angle. Half-forward Tomás Harrington pounced on a breaking ball and added a fine individual score before John Connors pointed over the shoulder on 15 minutes.

Adamstown then dominated possession and started to take control as Shane Bradley pointed on the sideline while Connors added to his tally from play.

The first goal came when corner-forward Harry Cosgrave gathered a low ball, turned his man and buried low to the net on 20 minutes, and Adamstown now led by 1-7 to 0-4.

Full-forward Jamie Murphy added Askamore's first point from play after he caught a sideline ball. Tomás French registered from play while John Connors and Ted Kinsella added frees just before half-time, so Adamstown led by 1-11 to 0-7 at the break.

Just from the throw-in Adamstown added a killer blow to any hope of Askamore making a comeback. Bradley linked well with Tomás French and he passed to Connors who buried the ball from close range.

Harry Cosgrave set up Shane Bradley who pointed from 45 yards before wing-back John Whelan executed an excellent sideline cut from 40 yards out. The New Ross District side now had a commanding twelve-point lead with 25 minutes remaining.

Askamore then rallied as they scored five unanswered points from Ted Kinsella (three, two frees), Jamie Quinn and John Byrne to bring the deficit down to seven.

That was as close as the Gorey District men could get as Connors added three frees and two excellent scores - one on his right and the other off his left from tight angles - as Adamstown took over once again.

Askamore went for goals in the last few minutes, but Ted Kinsella blazed a 21-yard free over and a John Harte attempt at goal also met with the same result. Shane Bradley added to his tally in the final minutes as Adamstown advanced to the county final.
