Adamstown power to victory in district final
JBHC final New Ross
Adamstown powered to victory over a youthful Taghmon-Camross side to take the New Ross District Junior B Hurling Championship title in Clongeen on Sunday evening last.
Adamstown 2-11 Taghmon-Camross 0-10
The victors were indebted to a superb performance from corner-forward Johnny Connors. The bulky attacker was the biggest difference between two fairly evenly matched sides on the night as he combined a robust style with excellent score-taking and accurate build-up play.
There was plenty of examples to come but there was nothing as clinical as Connors' sixth minute goal that helped his side into a three point interval lead.
It came out of nothing more than a hopeful long Liam McDonald free that found its way to Connors - the forward did the rest.
Taghmon responded well to falling 1-1 to 0-1 behind with four Michael O'Gorman frees and a Richard Stafford point dragging the runners-up back to level-pegging after 24 minutes.
Playing with a decent breeze Adamstown eventually put together a string of points at the end of the half and went in at the interval leading 1-7 to 0-6.
Connors, who had been denied by a superb Jack Dunne save just before half-time, opened the scoring after the break and Taghmon didn't respond until their goalkeeper nailed a long-range dead-ball in the 39th minute.
Trailing 1-10 to 0-8 with ten minutes remaining Taghmon had a big chance to get back into the game when Gerry Murphy released Michael O'Gorman but his shot was well smothered by the busy Paul Delaney.
The game was put to bed with just two minutes of normal time remaining when Tomás Harrington drilled a second Adamstown goal to the net meaning Connors could afford to smash an injury-time penalty wide as his side hung on to book a county semi-final meeting with Askamore.
